The shellfish ... ... route
Cockles at St Jacut-de-la-mer
Long peninsula between the bays of Arguenon and Lancieux. The village architecture is very unusual: the houses are built with their gable wall facing the roadside and tightly grouped to protect them from the North wind.
Oysters in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo.
Well-known seaside resort with 7 beaches. From 1900 onwards, bathers have walked along the sand. The town is divided into 3 districts: Les Mielles: the seaside resort, La Garde: on the hills and l'Isle (island): picturesque fisherman's district with narrow lanes.
Mussels in the bay of La Fresnaye
A large bay which is deep set between Cap Fréhel (headland) and Pointe (headland) de Saint-Cast-le-Guildo. Typical of the area, with sprawling mud-flats exposed at low tide and salt marshes.
Scallops and clams in Erquy
Fishing port. Capital of the Scallop. Despite being a tourist attraction in summer, the town has kept its charm.
Mussels in Planguenoual and Hillion
The town of Hillion forms a peninsula to the east of the Côtes d'Armor, in the cove of Yffiniac. In autumn and winter thousands of birds come to nest here.
Scallops in the bay of Saint-Brieuc.
This is one of the three largest bays in the North of Brittany. At low tide, the sea can retreat over 7 kilometres in the cove of Yffiniac, exposing large stretches of silt.
Oyster in Paimpol
This is the Iceland fishermen's town. You will see attractive shipowner's period town houses and be moved by the sailor's cemeteries. From the Pointe de l'Arcouest (headland), there is a magnificent panoramic viewpoint of the Bréhat archipelago.
Mussels in Plougrescant
This is a small town in the centre of a peninsula surrounded by small islands 17 kilometres from the coast, highly indented by wind and tide, with lots of small rocky islands. The traditional activity up to the 20th century was seaweed gathering.
Cockles in the Bay of Plestin-les-Grèves
Huddled at the mouth of the Douron. This shoreline is also known as the huge stretch of sand (4 kilometres long and a tidal zone 1 kilometre wide) is very widely exposed to the North.
The “Coquille Saint-Jacques” or scallop
Speciality in Côtes d’Armor and more specifically the bay of Saint-Brieuc
It can be cooked in several ways and and you will find it on the menu in many restaurants.
The abalone
This is a rare and refined shellfish. Because of its scarcity, fishermen do not reveal the areas in which they are found.
